Service, compassion, empowerment.

Growing up in Cambodia, I was immersed in the harsh realities of third-world poverty from an early age. Poverty wasn't just a concept—it was the fabric of everyday life. Through this upbringing, I developed a deep appreciation for the opportunities I had, particularly when contrasting my experiences in America with those in Cambodia.

As I traveled back and forth between these two vastly different worlds, I realized the immense privilege I enjoyed came with a responsibility to give back. While my passion for design burned brightly, it was matched by an equally strong dedication to social work.

In Cambodia, where social work and aiding the impoverished is often overlooked, I embraced the belief that my privilege wasn't just random chance—it was a calling to uplift those less fortunate in my homeland. Through this journey, I've come to understand that true fulfillment lies not only in pursuing personal passions but in using them as instruments for positive change.

In the midst of the Covid pandemic, this sense of duty felt even more urgent. Witnessing the widespread suffering and hardship, I felt compelled to make a difference in my community.

That's when I decided to start my own NGO school for the disadvantaged kids in Phnom Penh. Growing up in Cambodia, I knew the struggles these children faced all too well - the lack of education, the limited opportunities.

With determination, I gathered resources to teach them English, Chinese, and computer skills. But it wasn't just about academics. I wanted to broaden their horizons. So, I organized a trip to Angkor Wat, a symbol of our homeland that many of them had never seen.

For the older students, I wanted to prepare them for what lay ahead. Together, we explored job interviews, partnering with a local company to provide real-world experience. And when it came to funding our efforts, I wanted them to be involved every step of the way. They played a vital role in planning and executing our fundraiser.

Our Journey Together

What truly inspired me were their dreams.

Hearing their aspirations, I realized that each effort was a step closer to helping them achieve their goals. It wasn't just about education; it was about empowerment. And in that journey, I found my purpose - to inspire hope and encourage them to strive for a brighter future, against all odds.

Giving back to my community isn't just a duty— it's a fundamental part of my identity.

Nothing fills my heart more than bringing joy to others. This commitment to making a positive impact will forever define who I am.

It influences my approach as a designer in the way that it reminds me that the world is bigger than us. With humility and love in my heart, I design with the understanding that every creation has the power to make a difference.
